5/ Chapel of Corpus Christi

The High Gothic chapel was founded in the mid-1480s by the Confraternity of Corpus Christi, just before the construction of St. Barbara's Cathedral began as a cemetery chapel with an ossuary, and from the mid 17th century it was listed under the patronage of Corpus Christi. The building is situated on the edge of a rocky promontory. The architectural uniqueness – a single-nave building with three spaces with ribbed vaults glazed by narrow ribs without buttresses on massive cylindrical columns – was created by the Prague construction smelter. The original plan called for a two-storey building, but only the lower floor was created, which is accessible by a staircase from the west side. The cemetery was probably located on the site of the later Jesuit college.

At the time when the Jesuits were active in Kutná Hora, the chapel served as their oratory. However, when the order was abolished in 1773, the chapel began to change its owners and its use, and in the sum of these facts, it gradually began to deteriorate until in the 1990s it was listed among the 100 most endangered monuments in the world. The city and the Ministry of Culture, however, did not accept this cruel fate, and between 1997 and 2000, a difficult reconstruction was carried out to save the chapel.
