Cathedral in Sedlec

This Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist, together with the Church of All Saints, is the oldest part of Kutná Hora, and together with its historic center and the nearby Church of All Saints, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It was built between 1290 and 1320. The cathedral was a monastic church of the former Cistercian abbey, founded in 1142, which was the oldest abbey of this order in Bohemia.

At the end of the 17th century, Abbot Henry Snopek decided to rebuild the cathedral. He approached then the young architect Jan Blazej Santini-Aichel, who used his original style - Baroque Gothic.

In the interior, besides many exceptional artistic monuments (for example, paintings by Peter Brandl, Michael Leopold Willmann or Jan Kryštof Liška), you can also see one of the rarest jewels in Central Europe, which is the original Sedlec monstrance. It is one of the oldest surviving Gothic monstrances in the world.
