Hrádek - Czech Silver Museum and Medieval Silver Mine

The originally fortified wooden fortress, which dates back to 1312, was rebuilt at the beginning of the 14th century by Václav of Donín, the royal bailiff of Kutná Hora, into a Gothic residence called Hrádek. Afterwards, many different owners changed, and the Hussite wars took place here, which devastated Hrádek considerably.

At the end of the 15th century, Jan Smíšek of Vrchoviště, a mine owner and silver ore merchant, became the owner of the castle and had it rebuilt into a patrician palace in the Vladislav Gothic style.

As early as 1910 the town had the intention to establish a museum here, but this was disrupted by the two world wars. So, the museum opened only after the reconstruction, which took place from the 1950s to the 1970s.

As a part of the mining-historical exhibition, it is possible to visit the 280-metre-long part of the medieval mining work - the St. George's Adit, which is definitely worth a visit if you are not claustrophobic.
